Friends of the Florida State Parks would like to share articles published by the National Parks and Recreation Association in the Spring of 2010. Click the links in this introduction to go to the E-Zine "Parks and Recreation" and read about other state parks throughout the country and the challenges that they are facing. The first story "On the Brink", describes budget impacts on 10 different state parks in other states. The second story , "Saving State Parks" , describes some of the fiscal threats to state parks and the counter strategies of their advocates.
Friends of Florida State Parks, Inc. would like to thank our Governor and the Florida Legislature for their wisdom in funding our current State Park Budget. However membership in the Friends of Florida State Parks, Inc. is also needed to help protect Florida State Parks from the challenges other States are facing. The Friends of Florida State Parks, Inc. is dedicated to educating citizens and community leaders about the importance of these natural treasures.
We invite you to take action to protect the environment. In celebration of the 40th anniversary of Earth Day which was marked on April 22, 2010, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) launched an interactive blog www.dep.state.fl.us/EasyAsOne and a Twitter account www.twitter.com/EasyAsOne corresponding with its new environmental awareness campaign Easy As One – Ordinary actions. Extraordinary results. These online resources will provide you and your family simple tips regarding daily activities which will make a critical difference to our environment.

Students from Oak Park School in Sarasota became the newest volunteers to support Friends of Florida State Parks efforts in March. Twenty-six students with varying exceptionalities spent hours stuffing membership brochures for outreach initiatives. This type of volunteer experience offers these students a unique opportunity to build job preparation skills. The class is also looking forward to visiting a State Park this spring as part of their curriculum which is designed to build life skills. Thanks Oak Park!
